KVO Launches New Eco-Tourism Trail Connecting Three Villages

A new 48-kilometre trekking trail linking Sost, Khunjerav, and Shimshal has officially opened, offering visitors an immersive journey through high-altitude landscapes and local community life.

After two years of planning and community consultation, KVO has officially inaugurated the Upper Gojal Heritage Trail — a 48-kilometre route connecting the villages of Sost, Khunjerav, and Shimshal. The trail passes through alpine meadows, glacial moraines, and ancient pastoral landscapes at elevations ranging from 2,900 to 4,700 metres above sea level.

Designed for Sustainable Tourism

The trail has been designed with minimal environmental impact in mind. Waypoints are marked with painted stones rather than signboards, camping sites are designated to prevent habitat disturbance, and all waste management is handled through a porter-based pack-out system. KVO has trained 15 certified local guides who will accompany groups along the route.

Economic Benefits for Local Communities

The trail is expected to generate direct income for 45 households through guiding, homestay accommodation, and the sale of locally made handicrafts and food. KVO estimates that each trekking group of 6 visitors will generate approximately PKR 180,000 in local economic activity over a 5-day traverse.

Bookings for the 2026 summer season are already open through KVO's official tourism portal. Groups are limited to 12 people to protect the fragile alpine environment.
